Overview of the course: Information Literacy course.

ASSALAMUALAIKUM WARAHMATULLAH WABARAKATUH

Peace be upon you, my readers.

First of all, I would like to thank my lecturers who are willing to teach us throughout this third trimester. This subject would be my last subject for ICT packet, but knowledge will be always with us.

In this first week’s post, I will share what I have learned. Actually, I have no idea about this course, but we did a fleeting overview on the subject. So I have obtained a little piece of information about the subject, but it is a big thing for me. What I have got is that Information Literacy is a set of ability or a skill which helps up to find information. What is more, the main purpose of studying this subject is to obtain information faster and more efficiency at the right matter from credible resources or being able to locate information in a various formats and sources.

At the same, I know what I am going to learn throughout discourse. Big 6 process is the main character for this week. This process consists of six stages. There are task definition, information seeking behavior, location and access, use of information, synthesis and evaluation process. Once we are expertise of this process, we now can be information literate. In the meanwhile, we are strengthening additional abilities which can sharpen literate skill more precise and active.

Overall, I am really happy to see my real progress and have chance to get involved into this subject. Furthermore, I am really impressive, because my lovely lecturer could explain very well to me on the matter in the class.

Structure of Information & Information Formats.

ASSALAMUALAIKUM WARAHMATULAH WABARAKATUH

Let me greet you again and hope you are in good health.

In today’s post, there would be stressed upon type of sources. The sources, I have learned, is divided into three types known as primary, secondary and tertiary sources.

In primary sources, it is basically an original object or document or first-hand information which is produced in the time period. At the same time, it enables the researcher to get as close as possible to what actually happened in certain period. We can recognize it as contemporary accounts, original documents, unpublished and published works. It may include diaries, letters, memoirs, journals, speeches and many more.

For secondary source, it is something written about a primary source that is written after the fact. We can recognize it by interpreting it as interpret primary sources, examination of second studies or second hand. This source is usually in the form of published works, like journal articles, books, radio, TV documentaries and so on.

In the last paragraph, it is tertiary source. This is known as collection of primary and secondary sources. It includes most types of references such as bibliographies of bibliography, directories of directories and guides to the literature.

With this given information, I hope all readers can understand roughly what kind of source that we can retrieve in order to give us a proper reliability.

Search Tools

ASSALAMUALAIKUM WARAHMATULAH WABARAKATUH - Hi everyone

New day comes, new lesson takes place

To my respective readers, I have tried to come up with a short new topic for this post. As promised word, I want to declare that search tool is the topic will be discussed.

According to my reflection from In-class learning, search tool is a tool or service which is designed for searching a content of information in the internet. This tool enables us to reach any kind of information from wide resources. It actually consists of may tool, such as search engines, meta-search engines, subject directories and so on. However, I would like to express on search engines which I have known so far from the lectures.

A search engine is a software system that is created to find for information on the World Wide Web. The search results are generally launched  in a line of results.

A search engine is really a general class of programs. It popularly include Google, Bing and Yahoo! These systems enable users to search for documents on the internet.
Every search engine may not be the same, because it uses different complex mathematical formulas to generate search results.

With this short briefing, I expect that I have elaborated to my readers in a way of easily understanding. Nevertheless, this information has a potential to distribute a comprehension from the passage.

I am looking forward to share another topic with you. Good luck!

Search Strategies Basic

ASSALAMUALAIKUM WARAHMATULAH WABARAKATUH

I hope my readers are fine and enjoyable with crucial time of life.

In this post’s lesson, there is a brief talk on search strategies. This is another topic that we learned. I proudly dare to say that I attended this lecture with a full effort. This helps me to find out the important of the content. There are three major strategies force under my understanding. In order to expend my knowledge, I would like to share about those strategies.

Firstly, Boolean operator is a basic way of searching information. It is simple word used as conjunctions to combine or exclude keywords in a search. It gives productive results if we use the right way and word. It consists of AND, OR and NOT. This would save time and effort in finding the desirable content. For example, a search on stock market AND trading, this may include results like stock market trading or trading on the stock market and so on.

Truncation is another good strategy. It broadens our search capabilities. It allows us to retrieve multiple spellings of a root word, such as singular and plural forms. Truncation expands the search to locate all words beginning with the same root. For instance, teen* will give result as teen, teens, teenage, teenager and so forth.

Lastly, a wildcard is symbol strategy. It has a special character, such as an asterisk (*), question mark (?), or pound sign (#). A wildcard is used in the middle of a word to match content. It usually describes a single character, like the word of wom?n. this will return woman, women, and womyn.

With these three major strategies, they really assist me in finding information. I use less time and get a desirable content too. I recommend to all my readers to keep these in mind, because you are the one who has been surfing internet in finding content. I can guarantee that these will help you a lot.

Hope you enjoy my writing.

Citation & Documenting Information Sources

ASSALAMUALAIKUM WARAHMATULAH WABARAKATUH

Welcome again with peace befalls to all my lovely reader

Now we are on new topic. This is already fifth content. For this space of post, there will be full of formats, because citation information source is our topic for today. It is my honor to share what I have taken from my lecture. I will stress only upon APA style of citation.

There are two types of citing text. They are in-text citation and referencing list. Anyway, I purposely focus only referencing list in form of APA style.
Firstly, I want to rise on APA style’s definition. APA format is the official style of the American Psychological Association (APA) and is commonly used to cite sources in educational approach. The APA style originated in a 1929.
Secondly, it is all about its format. Based on my lecture, there are several formats, but I bring you some to refer.

- BOOKS WITH ONE AUTHOR
Format: Author. (Year). Title of Book. Place of Publication: Publisher.

- BOOKS WITH TWO OR THREE AUTHORS
Format: List all the authors. Use ampersand (&) before the last author. (Year).
Title of the book. Place of Publication: Publisher.

- BOOK WITH MORE THAN SIX AUTHORS
Format: First author until sixth author, et al. (Year). Title. Place of publication:

Publisher.

- CORPORATE BODIES AS AUTHORS
Format: Corporate author. (Year). Title of Book. Place of Publication: Publisher.

- MORE THAN FIRST EDITION
Format: Author. (Year). Title of book. Edition. Place of Publication: Publisher.

- EDITED BOOKS
Format: Editor. (Ed./Eds.). (Year). Title. Place of publication: Publisher.

- JOURNAL ARTICLE
Format: Writer of the article. (Year). Title of the article. Title of the Journal,
                       Volume
(issue/no.), page.

- NEWSPAPER ARTICLE
Format: Writer of the article. (Year, month, day). Title of the article. Title of the
                       newspaper
, page.

These are all APA formats which are commonly used in academic paper, book and so on. These formats are significant to all students who are doing a research paper. Of cause, it functions very well to me in completing my given assignments. With the given information, I can hopefully benefit my readers as well.

Information Analysis and Synthesis

ASSALAMUALAIKUM WARAHMATULAH WABARAKATUH

Hope a real happiness befalls my readers.

For today’s post, I would like to mainly share with you how to evaluate resources. It is very important that we retrieve accurate and valid information. Due to global revolution, information is spread very fast and wide on the internet. This may lead people to gain some incorrect information in a way that people can give and edit online without regarding to accuracy, validity, or bias. So it is necessary that resources should be evaluated. With that, we can do evaluate by concentrating on the basis criteria; purpose, cope, authority, audience, information content, design and so on.

Once we receive the needed information, we are supposed to know how to organize and synthesize it. As what I have read and understood, the information must be organized. This allows people to understood easily and receive an accurate message from writers. By the way, there are four methods that we can use to organize our data. They are category or concept, chronological, hierarchical and alphabetical organization.

However, the given information is not supposedly sufficient to refer, but this is just my reflection on what I know to double in my understanding. In order to be effective, I would suggest you as my audience to elaborate more on those points. Why is it so? This is because this information is relevant with our academic world where we probably engage with variety of information on Internet to support our academic paper. Thus, we need to be conscious on this matter.

Thank you so much
